18.12.2006 Marist Red had a head start in the round robin drowning Southland 21 3 and NorthSport B 18 2. Tauranga was no match either (12 1). After another convincing win over Harbour City (16 7) NorthSport A put on the expected challenge in the final game of the preliminary round. After being up 5 2 in the second quarter NorthSport came back to even the score at 6 6 by the final whistle. The draw was enough for Marist to secure the semi final berth against Maranui. The team from Wellington forced the game into overtime with two goals in the last 20 seconds of the final quarter of a breathtaking clash. After overtime did not provide a winner a penalty shoot out had to decide and it took 7 shooters until the game was decided. Marist second miss meant the end to their championship campaign. The team struggled from that dramatic loss and failed to recover in time to claim the bronze leaving the medals to NorthSport.
