U14 Nationals - Marist Red

19.12.2009 U14 Nationals - Marist Red - Day Four
At the risk of plagarising the Michael Jackson flogging a dead horse fund (sorry - Michael Jackson movie title) This is it!!!!!!!!! Final time : Lets get ready to rumble.....

In the white corner, wearing the white hats and standing for all things good, clean, sporting and fair in NZ water polo..... MARIST RED And in the black corner, wearing the black hats and three day stubble..... North Harbour A An epic encounter was promised, both teams had breezed into the final unbeaten and unscatched so "its showtime". The Marist team had great support - both the boys and girls blue teams and a scattering of parents turning up to back and champion the white knights in the blue and red trunks. Miscellaneous neutrals also turned up to watch the showdown as well as various unruly miscreants wearing maroon colours.... And an epic encounter it was - Marist Red played the game they had been promising and alluding to all tournament. The first quarter started shakily with North Harbour making seemingly continual breaks to be desperately thwarted time and again by last line defence or poor shooting on their own behalf. At one - nil down at the end of quarter one Marist were probably extremely grateful. The second quarter gave Marist a fillip with Jordan levelling the scores early at 1-1. Another couple of Harbour goals caused some consternation at the margin until Kara scored to leave the margin at the end of quarter two the same as the previous quarter; Marist trailing by one at 2-3. And then it happened, quarter three seesawed back and forth; goal to Charlotte 3-3, goal to the evil empire 3-4, second goal to Kara 4-4, goal to the evil empire 4-5, goal to Ricci 5-5, dissallowed goal to Kara still 5-5, goal to Jordan 6-5... Marist into the lead for the first time in the game and finishing the quarter up 6-5. Ahhh! At this stage after the most thrilling of quarters am scanning the pool deck for the paramedics - how much excitement can middle aged males take? RR's heart is racing and he hasn't made a single drive! Quarter four - this is really it. And Hannah scores 7-5 Marist, could it possibly happen with four and a half minutes left? Could it? Unfortunately unlike at the movies or in fairytales where the forces of good overcome and conquer it wasn't to be. Three North Harbour goals gave a final score of 8-7 to the North Harbour wrestling team. They were tears, there was what could have beens, coach Kylie said "shame", but underlying this all was pride for this group of fighters who played so well and went so close but in the end fell just short. Congrats girls - you were great!

The presentations ceremony saw Ricci gain an outstanding player award and Jordan tournament MVP - fantastic effort; particularly well done to both these girls.

Final v North Harbour A Quarter scores; 0-1, 2-3, 6-5, 7-8
Scorers: Charlotte, Hannah, Jordan(2), Kara(2), Ricci

And finally a special huge thanks to Jo and Kylie who did such a fabulous job looking after our girls all week and producing a team to be proud of over the season; take a bow ladies - you deserve it! ... RR

U14 Nationals - Marist Red - Day Four
Semi Final: Heat doused....

This morning Marist Red doused the Hutt Heat to take a finals berth v arch rivals North Harbour A. A tradesman like performance probably made Hutt look a bit better than they actually were but Marist in the end still recorded an emphatic victory. Coach Kylies' post match comment; North Harbour - here we come.

Game facts: v Hutt Heat Won 10-4 Quarter scores; 3-2, 7-3, 8-4, 10-4
Scorers; Charlotte(2), Chloe (2), Jordan (4), Ricci(2)

U14 Nationals - Marist Red - Day Three
Waitakere Gold tarnished....

Only one game today as it turned out v Waitakere Gold Getting a post match quote from coach Kylie today proved about as successful as recent All Blacks world cup campaigns however manager Jo MM was marginally more expansive than the previous day; though unfortunately can't read what I wrote down in my notes that she said though am sure it was deep and telling. Tomo maintained a clean sheet for the game so she was given the honour of talking to the assembled press contingent for the post match interview; "good defence, pressing not fouling" were her feelings re the tenets of the solid defensive performance. The attack appeared to be in "cruise mode" until a slightly livelier final quarter doubled the score to some form of respectability. Fourth quarter intensity repetition will definitely be paramount tomorrow if sucess is to follow....... In the human interest stakes in the terraces the Marist Red supporters ranks were bolstered by several new arrivals so some increasingly boisterous support may be expected for the big games tomorrow at the "pointy end" of the tournament.

Game facts: v Waitakere
Won 10-0 Quarter scores; 2-0, 3-0, 5-0, 10-0
Scorers; Charlotte, Hannah, Jordan(2), Kara(2), Rebecca, Ricci(3)

Post match report on last nights "mingling" - apparently no incidents to report; no fouls, no kick outs - phew!

U14 Nationals - Marist Red - Day Two
Crushers crushed, Harbour drained....

Another day, another two victories The first game of the morning against the QEII Crushers produced "renewed passion" from the Marist Red girls according to coach Kylie - excellent! Far better in the pool against the capital city girls than tonight in the mingling session with the U14 boys!

Game facts: v QE11 Crushers
Won 17-1 Quarter scores; 6-1, 12-1, 16-1, 17-1
Scorers; Charlotte (3), Chloe, Hannah (4),Jessie (2), Jordan (2), Kara (4), Ricci Well done girls!

The afternoon game against Harbour City struggled to elicit a comment from manager Jo "no comment" MM nor coach Kylie. Eventually after much probing a human interest story emerged - one of their players wasn't that thrilled on being on the receiving end of an (obviously unintentional) throat kick from Kung Fu Chloe. Controversy at last even if I didn't see it. Tactically apparently the Marist 6 on 5's were "relatively ordinary" - well thats what I think I heard Kylie say, she's also mentioned having duck for dinner tonight. And tonight - big night - mingling time! Hopefully well chaperoned with Kylie taking her whistle along to prevent pressing and fouls. Review of this match up to follow tomorrow! Oh - yes and there was a game in there somewhere too...

v Harbour City
Won 7-3 Quarter scores; 1-0, 3-1, 6-2, 7-3
Scorers; Charlotte, Chloe, Hannah (2), Jordan, Ricci (2)

U14 Nationals - Marist Red - Day One
Winners are grinners and Tauranga and North Harbour B can please themselves....

It was almost Dickensian; both games definitely tales of two halves. The first game of the morning against Tauranga produced a solid first half performance then a lackadaisical second. The afternoon game on the contrary had a lethargic first half resulting in a half time bollocking from Coach Kylie to produce a much improved second half. Two games, two wins; no huge controversies, only one kick out against Marist in the two games.

Game facts: v Tauranga

Won 4-2 Quarter scores; 2-0, 4-1, 4-1, 4-2
Scorers; Charlotte, Jordan, Jessie, Ricci

v North Harbour B

Won 13-3 Quarter scores; 3-1, 4-2, 9-2, 13-3
Scorers; Charlotte (2), Chloe (2 - 1x 5m), Hannah, Jordan (6), Kara, Ricci

Tomorrows' victims: am - QEII, pm - Harbour City

U14 Girls Development

06.09.2009 The Marist U/14 Girls Development Team headed to Rotorua last weekend to compete in the U/14 development tournament with the intention of developing their individual and team skills. Among some very tough competition the girls improved quarter upon quarter, game upon game and at times gave some of the better teams a run for their money. Despite not winning a game it was important for the girls to remember that we were playing against clubs that only have 1 team at the U/14 level so were playing the "top teams" from Rotorua, Waikato and Mountfort Park. The girls had a great weekend and finished the final game with a great battle against Waikato losing by only 2 goals in a game that was only determined in the final 38secs. Well done girls, Michelle and I are extremely proud of you all and how far you came in such a short period of time. Also a huge thank you to the parents that came to support us and to Julian, Doug and The Team for organising everything, feeding everyone and most importantly not leaving anyone behind. ... K.Cooper
