U16 Boys take out NRL Title

23.09.2008 The Marist Red Under 16 Boys took the unbeaten Waitakere Gold team into extra time in the Boys Under 16 final after having held off North Harbour A 7-6 in the mornings semi final also in extra time. In the extra time period Marist went out to an 8-6 lead to look confortable with just over a minute remaining. But Waitakere struck back and almost equalised in the dying seconds but Marist Red held out to win 8-7. It was a thrilling three way contest with the next installment in Christchurch for the Under 16s Nationals.

NZWP Report

MARIST QUINELLA IN BOYS UNDER 16 DIV 2 NATIONALS

04.10.2007 The Marist Club provided both finalists in the National Under 16 Boys Division 2 Championships held in Tauranga last weekend.

Whilst Marist Blue was regarded as one of the teams likely to make the top four, the Marist White team was not. However the White team played extremely well winning or drawing all their pool and second round games to find themselves in a finals show down with the Blue team. The Marist Blues got off to a sound start in the final going 2 goals up but found themselves on the other side of some resilience as the Marist White team fought back to draw level at 6 all going into the final quarter. The Marist Blue team edged ahead again in the final quarter to grab the gold medals by 8-6. Marist Blue’s Shaun Jenkins won a Most Promising player award whilst Kurt Stevenson (Marist White) won another of the Promising player awards.

Meanwhile the Marist White Girls team went down 1-4 to Northsport C in the Girls Division 2 Under 16 Championship final. The Marist girls went into the final unbeaten but were unable to keep up the winning formula in the final. Katherine Graaf  (Marist White) won the Girls MVP Award.

MARIST MISS OUT ON SEMI FINAL AT NATIONALS

27.09.2006 The boys competition proved one of the closest in years with all 8 major clubs fielding very competitive teams. The Red team had a head start beating Waikato comfortably 13 – 4 but found it tough going from there notching close wins over Hutt (4 – 3) and QE II (6 – 4) before facing competition favorites NorthSport for the direct semi final berth. A strong overall performance raised hopes to repeat last year’s final appearance despite the 2 – 4 loss. All hopes were shattered 4 hours later against Tauranga when the team from the Bay knocked out Marist with a goal from a seagull just 2 seconds before the final whistle. While Tauranga moved on to the final Marist had to settle for 5th/6th play off. There they defeated Hutt 7 – 5 to finish the season on a winning note.

Despite some close results the Blue boys only managed one win over Southland to avoid last place. However, this result does not reflect the good level of water polo the team had played throughout the tournament.

Unlucky Silver at Nationals

A dramatic final of the U16 Boys National Club Championships in Christchurch saw the favorites from NorthSport with the better end, claiming the title over our Marist Red team. It took all extra time and a penalty shoot out to decide the game. 6 - 7 was the score at the end that left Marist disappointed but also proud of an excellent overall result.

Marist's Byron Thornhill got picked as 'Best Defensive Player'.
