27.09.2006 After beating Southland (21 – 0) and Waitakere B (18 – 1) comfortably the Red team met ist first big challenge in the Championship round snatching a close victory (3 – 2) over Harbour City and Tauranga (8 – 4). The direct semi final berth was denied by QE II who had the better end beating Marist 5 – 2. A later win over Hutt, however, put Marist on to NorthSport in the Semi which they lost narrowly by 3 – 4. Although dissappointed on missing out on the title defence the girls bounced back claiming the bronze in another close encounter with Harbour City (4 – 3). QE II notched the National title beating NorthSport in a dramatic final by 7 – 6.
The girls Blue achieved some good results beating QE II B (5 – 2) and Waikato (5 – 4) finishing 13th.
Marist Girls grabbed the silver medals at the recent Northern Regional Under 16 Finals taking the Pan Pacific Under 16 girls champions Northsport A into a penalty shoot out to determine the winners. Marist looked to have the title early in the game as they went to a 3 goal lead but Northsport clawed its way back and put the match into overtime when they equalised to make it 6all. Extra time couldnt break the deadlock so the game went to a penalty shoot out. Marist went 2 up in the shoot out but then missed its 2 last shots enabling Northsport to equalise again forcing the shoot out to a tie breaker that lasted another 3 shots before Northsport scored the determining goal to win 13-12.
Marist Boys took 4th placing after being stunned 4-3 by Waitakere in what has been a very close Boys competition. Marist couldnt back up to face a determined Tauranga challenge for the bronze with Tauranga taking a 6-0 victory and a deserved medal.
Marist Blue Girls and Boys both finished 7th in the Division 1 play offs whilst Marist white boys ventured to Hamilton for the Division 2 series and took 4th placing.
Both the Marist Red and Blue teams fly off to Christchurch to contest the National Under 16 Championships starting Saturday at the QE11 Pool.
