Pan Pacific Festival Day five

Marist Under 16 Boys "ROCK" big time.

Having overcome North Harbour 10-6 in the semi final Marist faced a staunch challenge from New South Wales.
The NSW state team took charge in the first quarter racing away 4-0 and with lots of fist pumping and yelling, seemed physically superior to Marist. However, unintimidated Marist lead by Matthew Lewis and Liam Scarborough opened Marists goal account to gain back control in the second period, narrowing the score to 3-4. With a strong crowd on their side Marists defence lead by goalie Harry Flood and Braedan Drennan stepped up and shut down NSWs attacking force. Meanwhile Darcy Ferigo converted another 6 on 5 opportunity and provided the crucial assist for the equalizer. At 6-6 before the final quarter the game was now for Marist to win and the team just kept going to take an 8-6 lead. When Harry Flood blocked a crucial penalty NSW ran out of time and only managed to close the gap with another more successful attempt from 5m in the final minute. With this win the team repeated its 2008 success in the then U14 division.

Special congratulations to Darcy Ferigo who was named Under 16 Boys MVP for the tournament. ... article - O.Adam

           Agenda

NL Preliminary Round

28.05.2010 After securing top place for the NL finals play off and believing they have locked away the National League shield for the season, Marist Magic women took the opportunity to rest 5 starting players and give the bench some game time in their match against NZ Youth. The move resulted in a one point lose to NZ Youth but Marist still finish the year, 7 points clear of its nearest rival in the preliminary rounds. In an effort to try and wrestle one of the two National League shields the club holds, away from Marist, NZ Youth are now claiming rights to the shield. The club is now working through the issues with NZWP and hopefully common sense will prevail … National league Finals 5th June MISH.

19.05.2010
Both the Marist Mens and Womens teams came away with good wins against local rivals North Harbour last Friday night at MISH.

The Marist Magic WOMEN, who finish the National League preliminary rounds unbeaten, came out victors, in a tight game that looked to be headed for a 7-7 draw until Lisa Van Raalte drew a penalty that Danielle Lewis scored from with 32 secs left in the game. The final score 8-7 to our Marist Magic Women.

The Marist Magic MEN avenged an early season loss, with an 8-7 win over North Harbour. The 1st quarter ended 2 – 2 after Marist scored first and looked the stronger in the offense, but North Harbour stormed back to be 6-2 up at half time after a number of errors by Marist and a nice 6 on 5 play by North Harbour put them ahead. Marist dug deep and lead by Shaun (who scored the next 2 goals from set), went on a 6-0 run in the 3rd to lead 8-6 going into the last quarter. North Habour with 1.30 left on the clock, scored to take the game to 8-7 but Marist managed to hold on for the hard fought 8-7 victory.

The Marist win in the MENS game means that Marist captured the MENS National League Shield which North Harbour has held all season. Marist are now the proud holders of both the MENS and WOMENS National League Shields for 2010. The Marist Magic WOMEN, who started the season as holders of the shield, hold the WOMENS Shield by going unbeaten at home throughout the season.

Both teams have now qualified for the National League semi finals which will be held on Saturday June 5th at the Millennium Pool. Club members are asked to make an effort to attend and support our teams.
Further details of these games to follow ... Cheers Kurt

Pan Pacific Training times

07.05.2010 Under 14 boys please NOTE time change Thursday training.

Below are the Pan Pacific training times for those that have registered for the Pan Pacific squads.

Players that have registered for the Boys Under 14, Girls Under 14, Boys Under 16 and Girls Under 16 squads are advised that although Marist has entered two teams into each of these grades, word is that all NZ Clubs will only be able to have ONE team play in each grade due to the large number of teams entered into these age groups. This may mean that many of you may not get to play in this year's tournament. This is not something that Marist club has any control over.

A friendly reminder to all those players that have not yet paid their Pan Pacific registration fee. These are now due. Players that do not pay, will be replaced in final team selections by paid up players.

To those players that do make the final teams please remember that you will be required to wear the current Marist togs and uniform to all Pan Pacific games.

The committee wish you all the best, we hope that you all have a most enjoyable tournament and we look forward to some great results.

Pan Pacs.

The committee wish to advise under 12 players and parents that under 12 players will not be permitted to play in the 2010 Pan Pacific Tournament. The main reason for this position is that the committee wish to give all under 14 players a chance to compete in the Pan Pacific Tournament. The Pan Pacific Tournament is a 2 year event meaning that this years under 12 players will get a chance to play in the 2012 Pan Pacific Tournament. Marist had originally entered two under 14 girls teams and 2 under 14 boys teams into this years event. It is our understanding that all NZ clubs will be told that they will only be able to enter one under 14 girls team and one under 14 boys team this year, due to the number of overseas teams entered into this age group. This means that Marist will have a possible 15 places available in the girls team and 15 places in the boys team. From the muster held last Saturday, we have 21 girls and 27 boys registered, for this age group. (those under 12s that did register are not included in these numbers). The committee believes that the Under 12s currently have a full program with three tournaments throughout the year and would be better suited to concentrate on developing their skills and doing well in these three under 12 tournaments. The committee thanks you for your understanding.

Players wishing to play in the Pan Pacific Festival will need to pay a $120.00 registration fee. This Pan Pacific Registration fee is extra to the normal club registration fee which will be $390.00 this year. If a player wishes to play in two age grade over the Pan Pacific festival, then they will be require to pay $120.00 plus $40.00 per additional grade played. (this may apply to under 18s / under 20s and possibly a few under 16s). Fees are payable on registration day.
If a player does not make the team they have registered for then the registration fees will be refunded in full.
If a player withdraws from a team after being selected, no refund will be given.

Marist Family

08.02.2010 Center Back needs Help!

Many of our Marist family will know Grant McAneaney, either because he coached us, coached our daughter, refereed one of our games or just because he is a part of the water polo family. Grant was last year diagnosed with cancer and is currently playing a great game at center back.  But he needs a little help to keep out the opposing center forward. (he's a big sucker). Grant has started a blog koolcoach for himself, others in the same boat and for those who would just like to know how he is doing and maybe be on his team. If you want, please stop by and leave him a message. I know it will help !...... >>> more

New Trophy - National League

Re: National League Trophy
 _____________________________________________________________

Dear Clubs, As you are probably aware, NZ Water Polo will be introducing a new trophy for our National League competition – preliminary round only. There is a Shield for both the women’s and men’s competitions. Clubs/Teams will be playing for the ‘National League Shield’, which will be up for grabs in each home game of the holders. There is no limit to the number of times the Shield can change hands during the preliminary round of the League. The Club/Team that holds the Shield after their last home game of the season will be the winners of the Shield for that particular season/year. Inaugural defenders are last year’s preliminary round winners: - Marist for the women (1st home game v Harbour City on March 14th at SHC) - North Harbour for the men (1st home game tomorrow v Waitakere at MISH) When a Club/Team takes (or successfully defends) the Shield they become not only responsible for the Shield itself, they are also responsible (asked to) for ‘putting up a show/market’ the Shield. This can be through publications in media, at the venue etc. etc., but also on pool side where they either celebrate defending the Shield or hand it over in case of a defeat. Let’s make the Shield become a main trophy of which Clubs are proud off and want it!

Kind regards, Eelco

Double Silver at the Under 14 Nationals Christchurch.
And Double Bronze from Under 14 Div 2 Nationals

Congratulations to both our Marist Red Boys and Marist Red Girls teams who won silver at the Under 14 Div 1 Nationals in Christchurch this past week. Silver may not have been the colour that we were chasing but Silver is still very very GOOD !!!! The club has had a bit of a lean year, but with a Pan Pacs year coming lets all enjoy the Christmas break, regroup and bring it home in the New Year.

Congratulations also to the Marist White Girls and Marist Black Boys teams who both brought home bronze from the under 14 Div 2 Nationals in Hamilton.

Link to the final days reports from our roving reporter who was poolside at the girls Div 1 tournament. RR did post these to me late Saturday night, as you'd expect of a quality journo, unfortunately I let the team down and have only just posted them. Thanks to Julian Harris alias RR, for the time and effort taken to put these together for those of us that stayed behind. The reports helped keep us in the loop and were 100 times better than the normal final score, and “we played ok” reports our darlings give us when we ring them. Best of luck to you and the family as you prepare for you move back to Australia.... click here ...photo B.lloyd

Double Bronze at Under 16 Division 1 Nationals

11.10.2009 Double bronze fell the way of the Marist Red teams at the Under 16 Division 1 Nationals in Wellington. The girls grabbed the bronze medal against Tauranga taking command of the game in the first quarter to lead 4-1 at half time. Despite Tauranga making a comeback the girls held on to win 6-4 - a great effort after losing to Tauranga twice during the season. Rachel Burns won an outstanding player award and coach Rosemary David's butterflies went by the end of full time!! And the boys so devastated by the previous nights loss in the dying seconds of the semi finals didnt allow a repeat of that as they went charging out against Hutt to open up a comfortable lead early in the game and eased away to win 11-4 and take the bronze medal. Matt lewis took an outstanding player award for the boys competition. The Marist Blue girls played against Rotorua in the plate section final losing to Rotorua for the second time in the competition whilst the Marist Blue boys tied for 7th overall with Waikato drawing todays play off game 9 all - which meant that Marist had two boys teams in the top 8 of the Championship. So its up to the Under 14s to get that elusive goal medal in 2009 when their Championships are held in December....C Hayward   ... click on image for a larger view photo S Atoni

Under16 Div 2 Nationals SILVER

04.10.2009 Congratulations to the Marist Under 16 Girls White team who have added the National Division 2 silver medal to the NRL gold medal they won last month. Marist White lost in the final 1 – 9 to Otago. Congratulations also to Ashley Flavell, who picked up a Most Promising Player award. ... more

Marist White Boys finished 5th equal also at the Under 16 National Division 2 tournament after a 3 – 3 draw, against Palmerston North Boys’ High School.

UNDER 18 WOMEN GRAB NATIONAL BRONZE

01.10.2009 Marist Red Under 18 Women clung on for the bronze medal against a resilient Waitakere team winning the match 3-2. The U18 womens team had been beaten by North Harbour the previous night in the semi final - their first loss to North Harbour all year. What a pity it happened at Nationals. QE11 went on to retain the title and #1 ranking. The Marist Blue team got pipped in the elimination match for 9-11th play off 4-3 by the Northern Districts team The Under 18 Mens Red team - many of whom will be returning next year and the following year finished on a high note beating Harbour City to take 5th placing for the second year in a row after being knocked out of the medal round by Tauranga - who have had two close one goal games with Marist this season. The Under 18 Blue team showed grit to win the battle of the B teams beating Hutt B for 7th placing in the tournament having earlier beaten Waitakere B and Maranui.

MARIST BAG 4 GOLDS AT NORTHERN REGIONAL FINALS

21.09.2009 Marist this weekend took out 4 of the 6 Northern Regional Water Polo titles on offer winning the Under 16 boys and girls Division 2 finals and also capturing the Under 18 Womens title and the Under 16 Boys Division 1 title. The Under 16 Division 2 girls took gold and silver in an all Marist final that saw Marist White beat Marist Black. And the Under 16 Girls Red team took out the bronze medal in the Under 16 Girls Division 1 play offs. The Under 18 Womens final was a nerve-racking affair against North Harbour with the scores locked at 3all before Marist Red took the winning goal in extra time to take the title 4-3 . Marist Blue came in 4th losing to Waitakere in the bronze medal match. The Under 16 Boys Red team took the Division 1 title beating North Harbour A 8-4 in the final after getting off to a flying start at 4-0 up. And Marist Blue pushed Waitakere Gold hard for the bronze medal before going down 4-6 to the West Aucklanders. The depth with the Under 16 section of the club was evident with both Under 16 Division 2 titles going Marist's way. The U16 Boys White team beat North Harbour C in overtime whilst the U16 Girls White team came from behind to beat the Marist Black team in the U16 Girls Division 2 final. A great day for these girls!!. ...C.Hayward

HIGH PERFORMANCE PROGRAM

01.10.2009 Please Note that this High performance programme is for current (2009) National Players or any Marist Senior Mens or Womens players. That is those "NZ Men and Women who played at the 2009 World League, Junior Men or Womens team that played at the 2009 World Champs or NZ schoolboys and schoolgirls players selected for the Test Series in December 2009. Some National U16 age grade players maybe considered-but space for these athletes is not guaranteed."

21.09.2009 With the U16 National Championships from 7th – 10th October the season for most competitive club teams will be over. Only the U14 club programme will still be actively preparing for their Nationals in December.

However, numerous players will represent New Zealand at various occasions towards the end of the year. To keep (or get) them in shape the Water Polo Institute are looking at introducing a 9 week training program that commences from October 12th until December 18th providing 6.5 hours per week of quality training under the supervision of Head Coach Kurt Goldsworthy and various Senior players to the participants. The programme is also open to Marist players that wish to prepare for the 2010 and National League. .... more info
